First Down with Fr. Eric (July 6, 2025)

Posted on: Jul 13, 2025

Dear Friends,

This past Friday was July 4th, Independence Day for our country. When one studies our history during that time, we might learn two major lessons. One would be the tremendous amount of courage and risk taken by those who signed the Declaration of Independence. To sign such a document meant that each person would be arrested and most likely be put to death for treason. Usually, we gloss over the actual history by simply thinking they signed a document. Secondly, the amount of luck that was needed to begin this country. An Army that on paper would be no match against the British. Somehow, these men would put up a huge fight and eventually win over the British army. Many things needed to fall into place to make sure this country could begin.

I just share these two thoughts that I reflect on each 4th of July. Our country is in need of recapturing courage, not being afraid to take a risk, and standing up for good principles.

Secondly, we must not be discouraged when it seems the odds are against us in recapturing what was once good about our country. The first word in our country’s name is United. Yet we see so many examples of people unwilling to work towards any kind of unity, each only looking out for their own interests.

Every country goes through ups and downs, and I think we can recapture the ideals that once were the cornerstone of our country.

Freedom from fear, inclusion of the many in seeking the common good. Making the word "united" central to our country.

I will still enjoy some hot dogs, watching fireworks, and some baseball, and at the same time, I will remember the story of how this country began.

Peace in Christ,

Fr. Eric
